Five Pearls Academic Scholarship
Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, was founded at Howard University on January 16, 1920 by five dynamic women: Arizona Cleaver Stemons, Pearl Anna Neal, Myrtle Tyler Faithful, Viola Tyler Goings, and Fannie Pettie Watts. The women sought to form a sisterhood that would answer the call and work to meet the needs of an ever-changing society. Our Five Pearls founded the organization based upon the principles of Scholarship, Service, Sisterhood, and Finer Womanhood. They upheld the notion that collegiate life, sorority socializing, and popularity should not outweigh the true purpose of these organizations, which is to strive to increase the standard and quality of life for those in her community.
The Founders saw the need for a more inclusive sisterhood. One that welcomed all types of women irrespective of color or creed. As long as a woman maintained high academic and moral standards, she would be considered worthy to join the organization. With over 125,000 members worldwide, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, has grown into an international organization of women in all fields of study including doctors, lawyers, social workers, teachers, and scientists.
